Long recognized as one of the most ideal residential towns in Massachusetts, affluent Bostonians have been attracted to this cosmopolitan suburb for generations.
Originally a haven for wealthy Boston Brahmins, an influx of upwardly mobile immigrant populations has given Brookline a more varied population over the last century. A wide variety of ethnic groups are present in the community today President John E Kennedy was one of the many famous people born in Brookline. Michael Dukakis, the Democratic Party's nominee for President in 1988, also made his home here.
Brookline enjoys all the conveniences associated with a suburb of Boston. Subway, commuter rail and buses all shuttle travelers from Brookline to downtown Boston and all the city's employment, entertainment, dining, and shopping establishments.
As one would expect of a community of Brookline's caliber, demand for housing here is high. Because of the large number of doctors, lawyers, academicians, businessmen, and other Boston professionals seeking living quarters in this renowned suburb, houses and apartments do not last long on the market. Apartments are found most frequently in the established neighborhoods closer to Boston, many in elegant older buildings. Luxury apartment houses have recently sprung up in various sections of town, in response to the constant demand for housing. South Brookline is mostly made up of gorgeous one family houses. Half-timber, Split Entry and Colonial style homes dominate in this part of town, housing many of Brookline's old families as well as young professionals recently moved to Brookline.
Brookline's educational system is considered one of the best in the country. Excellent elementary school programs and a high school with superb college preparatory courses account for Brookline students' incredible success in gaining admission to the nation's top-notch universities. Special needs programs are also exemplary.
Public services excel. A diligent police force contributes to Brookline's status as one of the safest communities around Boston. The town's public library is nationally renowned for its extensive and varied offerings. Spotless streets, a fine park system, and ample recreational facilities are among the reasons Brookline is considered one of the most habitable locations in the country.
A politically and culturally active town, Brookline has claimed more than its share of prominent leaders, writers, musicians and artists. Due to the cosmopolitan nature of the population, Brookline is watched closely by pollsters and marketers seeking evidence of new trends.
Nowhere else are comfortable suburban living, convenient location and excellent services combined so well as in Brookline. If you are one of those who cares a great deal about these criteria when choosing a residence, Brookline is perhaps your ideal in Boston area living.
